A pair of woodcuts found earliest in "Wonders of the Invisible World" by Cotton Mather. He wrote this book in 1693 in an attempt to defend the role he played in the Salem Witch Trials. It is also visible in "The History of Witches and Wizards" from 1720. In this book, bishops from this time period went around collecting first hand accounts from those involved in witch trials that took place around the world. Both texts use these illustrations to depict “eyewitness” testimony from the trials of “real” witches who were executed for consorting with the devil in exchange for otherworldly powers.
