The Assassin

“The Murderer” (in English) is a woodblock print by French artist Félix Edouard Vallotton. Inspired by post-impressionism and Japanese ukiyo-e art, his block prints emphasized stark, flat lines with designs that were considered “simplistic” due to their lack of details and dimension created through techniques such as cross hatching. This emphasis on simplicity is intentional, and the large areas of negative space only serve to better showcase the figure (and the weapon he wields).
