From “Nicolas Flamel: His Expositions of the Hieroglyphical Figures (1624).” This inscription is taken from a book published by famed Parisian alchemist Nicholas Flamel. This depiction is part of a series of images that Flamel commissioned to be painted upon an arch within the Cemetery of Innocents. The arch was intended to depict a series of “strange images” found within a magical tome that was said to hold information on the creation of the “Elixir of Life” -- The Philosopher’s Stone. We have no physical record of the arch’s existence, as the entire cemetery was exhumed and moved into the Paris Catacombs before being demolished due to overcrowding.
