A fabric handing of a print of Saint Margaret from 15th century Germany, as part of the Rosenwald Collection. She is also known as “Margaret of Antioch” and is a patron of safe childbirth, and often invoked for protection against devils. She was tortured for refusing to marry a man who asked her to renounce her belief system. This image depicts one of the many ‘fantastical’ tortures she survived, wherein she was swallowed by Satan (dragon form), and escaped by making the Sign of the Cross. Aside from the physical tortures by the hand of man, this is the most famous of the miracles. Others include her beating the crap out of the Devil with her fists and stomping on his throat, and causing an earthquake. In the end, she was beheaded.
