Dance of Death: Old Woman
Dance of Death: Old Woman
This print features one of the many prints from Hans Holbein the Younger's woodblock series, The Dance of Death (or Danse Macabre) from 1523 - 1525. Out of these Germanic Renaissance prints, 34 of them depict Death intruding the lives of everyday people to take them to the grave, whether they are happy about it or not. The individuals that Death interrupts come from various levels of society, with Death paying particularly rough treatment towards the rich, the powerful, and the holy, who don't want to accept that it's their time to leave this world with Death. The artist and designer (Holbein) and the printmaker (Lützelburge) worked together to create these prints that were originally the size of only 4 postage stamps - roughly 6.5x5 centimeters in size.
